i usually just count how many boxes or how heavy my ammo box is and decide if i need more from there.

I try not to think of it as a supply of ammo.
Rather it's a security thing,.....more ballast for the gun safe so someone can't move it.  So far the concrete floor it's sitting on isn't cracking....so I'm not finished yet.

i keep a bunch of ammo in my vehicle. atleast one piece of ammo for every gun i own. they make nice conversation pieces.
