How many here are fans of the battle proven handgun known as the 1911 .45 ACP? As far as I'm concerned the 1911 is the safest pistol design ever devised.

In "Condition 1", you have to complete three actions to discharge a round from the 1911. First, upon withdrawing the weapon from the holster, your grip on the weapon depresses the grip safety. Second, you depress the slide lock safety with your thumb. Third, depress the trigger.

Practice with this weapon makes the above listed sequence of events happen in one seamless draw from your holster. I find it to be the most naturally pointing handgun...sort of like an extension of one's finger when pointing at an object.

Of course, one could buy a Block, made in Austria, as they are made for those who can't remember anything except to pull a trigger....:D

The 1911 is the most accurate and reliable pistol made. I've been shooting them more than 40 yrs and that's what I'm comfortable with.

I bought a Colt 1911 a couple of years ago but I really need to practice with it more. It origonally belonged to a gunsmith who completely worked it over and it shoots great! Some guys use them for CC and keep them cocked but I don't know if anyone keeps the thumb safety off, too. Do you know? Craig

Only a fool carries a 1911 with the thumb safety off.

The old saying is true, 'cocked and locked'. Only way to carry a .45 unless you don't have a round in the chamber.

I went through the CCW course with my Colt .45 ACP. Left a big giant hole in middle of the target. :D

Hammer down on a loaded chamber is not a good idea. It's risky letting the hammer down and eventually it will get away. I have found I can rack one in as quickly as trying to thumb the hammer back. Carrying the 1911 cocked and locked is very safe. For a 1911 to fire the grip safety has to be squeezed and the trigger pulled. With the 1911 in a proper holster that covers the trigger it can't be fired.

I've got a Kimber Stainless II. I love it. A better gun could be had (for twice the price), but for my money a 1911 is a great reliable pistol.

I own both a Colt 1991A1 Compact (basically a 1911 Officers model) and a Kimber Desert Warrior. The Desert Warrior is a full sized .45 ACP pistol with a match barrel.

I've had a concealed carry permit for quite some time now. Winter carry is not an issue where I live due to the temperatures. I use a 5.11 Tactical series jacket that doesn't imprint even with a full sized 1911. Summer carry is where the difficulty of carrying concealed comes into play.

Down here in the deep south it's quite warm and humid about 7 months out of the year. Carrying unnoticed during the warm months can be difficult. Where I live folks are accustomed to guns and don't get alarmed if one showes through the clothing. Although I have over heard some out of towners protesting too many guns arround here to suit them. Even a small gun is hard to hide under the usuall summer garments worn here so you have to improvise. Wearing gun hiding clothing stands out and draws attention. Having a gun is better than no gun so a pocket .380 or 9mm can be carryed pretty much unnoticed. I like to have a bit more gun so I carry a fanny pack made for quick access of my 1911. Its also handy for toting a cam and snaks.

I also carry a full sized pistol and use a "fanny pack". It is actually made to carry concealed with a gun retaining system inside the back with a couple of pockets up front to carry other things in. I carry my truck keys, ID, and other such things in it to make it look more like a fanny pack than a pistol. It is natural looking to pull out your debit card or cash to pay for items. I use it year round and in whatever state I am legal to carry in.

On the comment on out of towners protesting about too many guns.

My sister was tending bar at a country club in AZ and a woman made a comment about a small town in NM where she and her husband had stopped in at an antique store. The woman said she had never been so scared in her life as she was there because there were a bunch of rough bearded men wearing guns and camoflage. My sister asked her where in NM she was and the woman told her.

My sister had lived there with her kids, and our parents still live there. My sister told the woman she had probably never been safer in her life as this group of men were well known to my sister, one was the former county sheriff, another was the county coroner, and several other upstanding residents of the community.:D :D

AMEN! I have a CCP and one time back home (idaho) an elderly lady came up and asked if I was a cop (had my shoulder rig on w/ my 1911). I told her that I was in the military and she thanked me for being armed. She felt safer in the store. This was in REI (one of the biggest liberal store around)! LOL

I carry A Colt National Match in Stainless, bulky but at handgun range there just isn't anything better in my humble opinion. You don't need 15 rounds when 1 big one will get the job done ;)

I love shooting the 1911, but I don't own one. I'm afraid I'd eventually give in to my desires and actually carry it as a defensive weapon. While it's a fine pistol, it's all wrong for me. My duty sidearm is the Beretta 92F and the safety/decock lever is up to fire. I just can't bring myself to go against my duty weapon, so I'm stuck with Berettas, S&W autos, Sigs the striker-fired autos or a wheelgun. I won't even dabble with the Para LDA series because I'm sure it'll make me want a traditional 1911, and then I'm back where I started! Sure do wish Uncle Sam would get rid of this stupid pop-gun and go with something bigger...maybe a striker-fire so I don't have to worry about safety/decock issues.

Had to edit this before I posted...apparently you can't hyphenate the word "decock":D

My only experience with the 1911 was when I was a Dragon gunner Stationed in Korea. I Loved shooting it. Almost as much as the Dragon.
Some day I will own one. A Vet buddy of mine wants to swap for one of my Garands but I aint giving up the big boys.

My M9 is extremely accurate with 147 Grain hollow points, I load my own and slow them down just a touch so they have a chance to expand and release some energy.

Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderfully adept pistol, especially for a military application where it gets neglected and abused. All mine have been fairly accurate, and any trigger issues have been worked out with a piece of crocus cloth when the armorer wasn't looking :D I just don't like the 9mm cartridge and firmly believe there's no reason for not adopting a larger caliber, especially in light of recent events. There is a reason the SOF went back to a .45...it works better. I understand there are those who can't shoot a traditional DA .45 due to magazine well/grip size and trigger reach, but the same cannot be said for the .40 S&W. Even if they want to stick with the Beretta platform to ensure compatibility with existing accessories (holsters, sighting devices, maintenance kits, etc) there's really no reason to not upgrade our technology to meet the need. Then again, I still think the M-14 was the greatest battle rifle ever invented, and wish the gov't would give the AR-10 and its derivatives a chance ;) But I digress…(again)…

I carry a Kimber 1911 Ultra CDP II from their Custom Shop. It has a 3.5 inch barrel and is very accurate up to 40 to 50 yards. I was looking for a 1911 that I could carry and this fills the bill. My first experience with the 1911 was back in the early '60s as an Armoerer.

My EDC (every day carry) is a Dan Wesson Bobtail and it is always in Condition 1. I have never had an issue with the thumb safety coming off of safe.

Gunsmith/Admin. I'm not buying slowing down a 147 grain 9mm will give you better performance. It's already sub sonic and speed helps it expand.

Adaminak the term decock is no longer used please in the future refer to the decocker as the Lorena Bobbit lever.:D

I love my 1911 is because being a girl that is 5'1" & 105lbs people are not expecting me to be carrying a gun at all much less a gun as large as the 1911.I have had to draw it a few times and the size of the guys eye balls when I did was just priceless & they decided messing w/me was the wrong thing to do.The first gun I ever held was the 1911 & fell in love w/it right away.So I the first gun I ever bought my Rock Island Armory 1911.He sleeps under my pillow & is my constant companion plus unlike a man he never talks back, always listens to me, & always there when I need him.He will always be my favorite gun but there are times when he is just too big to carry and so then I have to go w/my 9mm.Plus for over 70yrs the 1911 was the military issue side arm.It shoots a slow & heavy bullet.I just love everything about this gun.

But most importantly Because their Pretty!!!!! :p

If you're already familiar with the 1911 platform, have you checked out the Springfield Armory EMP?
3 inch barrel so it's plenty compact.
Talk about pretty........

And it's not just a pretty face, mine is a tack driver at normal handgun distances with 9mm 147 gr.

She really likes 1911's and we found her a good deal on a slightly used EMP. Almost every gal that shoots it really likes it.

I was looking for one for a while, but wasn't willing to pay over a Grand for one.

I found mine on another gun board.
The guy lived 1/2 hour away, and I picked it up FTF for $850.

Less than 200 rounds through it,.....still looked new. :)

I have a Springfiield 1911 now have had a Colt Government model mark 4 about 30 plus years ago. 1911 is the one for me I have no desire to shoot any one but if the need arises I want them knocked down and 1911 fits the bill.

Gotta love the old 1911s and all the variations. My Colt Series 70 Government has served me well and with some simple mod's they can be ultra reliable. Mainly polishing the snot out of the feed ramp.
