20,000 gun laws?

I've often heard spokespeople for the NRA state something like "We don't need more gun laws, we just need to enforce the 20,000 gun laws already on the books."

But I have to wonder, seriously, do we need 20,000 gun laws? I'd like to know peoples' opinions here, but for my own opinion, I think James Madison says it better than I could:

It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.

I can't agree with you more. The 20K laws are a compilation of 50 states plus the federal laws, and include such exotics as the ATF rules for Class III firearms and destructive devices, but even then 20K is just too many. My opinion is that our elected representatives at local, state and federal levels are looking to get their name in the books as doing something, and seize every opportunity to add legislature when simple enforcement of existing laws is all that's needed. Do we really need to declare playgrounds a "Gun Free Zone" or during the very few crimes that occurred near a playground, would enforcement of existing laws been punishment enough? Assault is still assault, and assault with a weapon is automatically aggravated assault which is universally a felony. Why add a special subset just for aggravated assault with a firearm, when you can get just as dead with a knife, or even a baseball bat? Until we, as a nation of the represented, start telling those we elected to represent us they're screwing up our intent, this will only continue to get worse, but I digress...

For example, just imagine how many laws would become redundant & unnecessary if we would merely enforce this simple one:

IF YOU KILL US, WE WILL KILL YOU BACK!

Even here in TX, we're too far away from the ideal - but at least you can watch the line move... :)

The United States probably does not need 20,000 gun laws. A few ENFORCED laws would surely be better.

Now is the time to make sure we keep pressure on our elected representatives to accurately convey our wishes. If they don't do what we want, the next congressional election needs to reflect our dislike and lack of trust. While I feel our nation's values and heritage are going to fall under attack, I refuse to abandon ship. Hopefully (and through the grace of God) I'm not underwater in a few years:)

We must pressure them at their weak spot - the desire to gain, or hold, office for the next term.

Several years ago, one of my congressmen was holding his party's line against the tax cuts; I wrote him a letter of protest and informed him as a business owner how his position would harm many of his constituents, and made it clear that I or anyone I knew would never vote for him again if he refused to do the right thing.

He actually sent me a letter of thanks back signed in his own hand, he voted conservatively on the issue & subsequently changed his party affiliation to "R".
