I have a nikon 3x9x40 scope and want to mount it on my colt m4, but the objective of the scope hits the forend. I want to be able to use my scope and back up iron sights is this possible using this scope. Do i need some special type of rings or something.

Get a medium or tall riser block and screw it on the rail. It'll raise your objective more than enough to get above the top heat shield. In the mean time, you can always pull the top heat shield off and shoot that way, just don't wrap your fingers over the top after emptying a mag or you'll feel a bit of heat.

Also, that's kind of a long scope for the M4. If you like to shoot with the stock adjusted to a short setting, you might look into a quadrail forend. Then you can slide it forward more if it's too close. Also, if you get very high, you might want to look into a stock-saddle or something for a cheek rest.
