So on youtube there's all these guys that show off their home defense shotguns that they've built up. I understand having a shotgun for home defense but these guys put on extended magazines and side saddle shell holders and stuff. I don't understand why you would need 11 rounds in the gun with six extra on the side incase someone breaks in. I think if you were in the middle of a gang war it would make sense but you really shouldn't need more rounds than the gun can carry from the factory. Is all that really necessary?

first, youtube is about as good of source for home defense as it is for medical advice.
your thinking right. its not really necessary.
Put a 28" barrel on your shotgun and try to move thru your house in the dark and not hit anything. that is going to be the length of the gun when you add a +5 magazine extension.
I understand someone wanting to overcome the low ammo count in a shotgun, but the effects of buckshot is the compensation for lack of round count.
Personally, My AR is the primary HD firearm, my XD is backup, my shotgun is a field gun.
If your going to use a shotgun for HD, practice with it using a timer. practice reloading it using the timer, practice transitions using a timer.
and when you load it at home, load it with ONLY buckshot. You dont want a load of birdshot first to make them run, you dont want a slug third to get thru their car door. you want 0, 00, or 000 buck (#1 buck being best, but hardest to find), and you want them dead right there.

Practice in the dark or blindfolded also......make it as "real" as the conditions you will be operating in. Make sure you know where your loved ones are located.....buckshot penetrates sheet rock.

Before you get concerned about buckshot penetration of sheet rock, bird shot will not penetrate the BG enough. It will make a nasty surface wound, but will not penetrate deep enough to get to vitals.

Bird shot does not have the knock down power of Buck Shot, but I have seen it penetrate enough(close it point blank) to kill.......know where your loved ones are. Stay in a corner and let the bad guys come to you and your family.

yes, birdshot can kill. so can a pellet gun.
birdshot doesn't reliably produce the penetration that is needed. I dont want the BG dead eventually.

I agree with you about using buckshot......I just stress knowing where your loved ones are so they don't get hurt. I disagree with you about the AR if it is in .223......poor choice of caliber(.308 for me-H & K 93)......I don't recommend .25 , .380, or even 9mm (although my wife likes her Browning-I just make sure the mag. is loaded with Hydo-Shocks)for knock down and killing power. I prefer at least .357,.40 S&W, or my favorite .45.

I just recently purchased a Mossberg 590 and I don't see why 8 rounds (double aught buck) wouldn't be enough to stop a home invasion robbery. I say 8 because I don't want one in the chamber. I WANT the bad guy to HEAR me racking a round into the chamber. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/teufel/devil-smiley-001.gif

Is that the same mossberg in their JIC (just in case) kit ?

the JIC (original) is a 500 with a pistol grip.
The JIC II is a 500 has the option of a stock or pistol grip.
the 590 uses a different magazine tube and barrel that allows for a magazine extension.
