View Full Version : Can you reduce AR recoil?

I know this sounds like I'm asking how to soften up a down pillow, but what are ways to reduce the recoil on an AR? (other than reducing the caliber to .22)
My dad has shoulder problems and I'm wondering what can be done for him other than tell him to shoot left handed.

I don't know. Adding weight will reduce the recoil, even if the recoil is pretty light to began with on a AR. Possibly the newer piston driven AR's might have slightly less recoil.

maybe add a muzzle brake?

Is this a carbine length gas system? If it is a carbine, depending on the loads you are running and the design of the gun, an H buffer may help.

I don't like muzzle brakes on an AR, it's hard on the ears.

JP makes some stuff to reduce recoil on ARs':

muzzle brakes are hard on the ears on any gun.
great for clearing a gun range in a hurry tho...

A chrome lined bore with 1:9 twist might be a chosie for less back pressure. Also, comercial 55gr., .223 loads instead of mil spec/5.56.

Its a DMPS Panther Carbine 5.56 1 in 9 barrel that when he fired it was using 55 grain .223.
I wonder if it is possible to reduce recoil enough not to mess with his shoulder, might need to get him to go see if he can take .22 recoil first. If he can't even take that then he is going to have to go to left handed.

Those JP parts sound perfect.

bigjoeguns, the funny thing is I have had professors say that the grading I do for them is liberal, so I guess I balance out somewhere in the middle.

I wonder, since my dad is on SS disability, maybe that means he should get the government to pay for those JP add ons. However by the time this happens we all may have to watch out for low flying pigs. [laugh]

Check out the Limbsaver or PACT body-worn shoulder pads. No permanent or expensive mods to the gun, yet significant recoil reduction. While the .223 doesn't have much in the way of recoil to start with, and there's really not enough gas volume for an effective brake, I think a combo of more weight and the Limbsaver would make for a very low recoil impulse.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

One other question along these lines, he has a lot of .38 Special ammo, is there an upper made that can take .38/.357 Mag ammunition?

All I know of would be .22lr uppers, 9mm, or .357 sig. As far as pistol ammo.

I haven't shot it, but 5.45x 39 might save you some recoil?

You might try these, they are LOUD but I run them on a semi M4 and on 1 of my M16 uppers. They do a great job in semi and full auto.

I'm just getting into shooting and bought my first AR from a dealer at a gun show. (found the show at gunshowsnow.com). I think it is awesome and from research, it seems like I got a great deal. I am trying to pics so you can tell me what you think of it. Got it with scope for 1,100.

I know this might seem too simple but a recoil pad might help

I'm thinking a SPAM filter might help too...........
