Compensator

I have a S&W 629 with a 4" barrel in .44 mag. I like shooting it in tactical coarses but it is slow back on target. I can reload with my speed loaders pretty fast but need to get it back down faster. Does anyone know of a compensator for the muzzle of this gun? If I could get one that was small enough to fit in a 6" barrel holster that would be perfect.

Have you looked into having the barrel ported?

I would reccomend getting the barrel ported.

Do a web search for "Magna Port" their web site will explain the process.

They add nothing to the barrel but cut ports through the upper portion of the barrrel to direct some of the gasses up therefore reducing the recoil jump.

Have you guys shot something with porting? This is a real nice gun to be drilling holes in.

Thanks guys, this is perfect. I just ordered a second barrel and will ship that to Magna Port for porting. This way I can try it and still keep the original barrel, which has very little wear.
I will let you all know how it turns out.

What kind of rounds are you shooting? Hopefully not full power magnum loads.

If not reloading try some cowboy action loads in .44 Special.

BTW, I use a S&W 1950 Target .44 Special with a 4" barrel.

I go back and forth between specials and magnums. The mags are cheaper and easier to get these days. I figure if I can handle magnums in a tach coarse I can handle just about anything.
If I was competing I would buy a little pea shooter, just enough to knock the steel down and hold more rounds. It is a whole lot of fun for me and excellent practice. I do not think anyone would want to break into my house, they would get a large diameter suprise.
I am in the market for a 1911 but as all of us can say they aint cheap any more.

I don't own a 629 / 44 mag. I have a Ruger Red Hawk & Super Red Hawk .44mag. I've been happy with both but at a range recently I had a chance to trade guns with the gentleman shooting next to me and compare how each one shot. He had a new Taurus .44 mag. with a factory ported barrel. If I buy another .44, that will be the one. Recoil and muzzel climb were greatly deminished. It was like I was shooting a much smaller round and I was using my ammo in the gun. It was also lighter than either of my Rugers. Just my 2 cents.

The two other things that Magna porting seem to bring to the table are increased muzzle flash and increased blast (sound) especially for those standing to the side.
But they DO decrease muzzle 'flip'.
