.038 of an inch. :P
Both are capable deer rounds
.308 probably has the wider selection of bullets. Modern powders get it up to velocities near a .30-06.
I'll have to look up the .270 to get better comparison.

.270 is essentially a necked down 30-06.......The shoulder is slightly different and the case length is slightly different.......very versatile and capable round. I prefer the .308, but that's just me........I know folks that swear by the .270.

Lets see...
.308 Winchester ranges in bullet weights of 110 gr to 200 gr with cast lead bullets of 115 gr to 200 gr. Cast lead is slower, less powder, only reloader rounds. Would make a nice cheap round for smaller game or at limited ranges.
.270 Winchester ranges in bullet weights of 90 gr to 160 gr with cast lead bullets of 150 gr.
.308 Win at 110 gr bullet with 50.0 gr of IMR4064 is 3184 fps
.270 Win at 110 gr bullet with 50.5 gr of IMR4064 is 3271 fps
.308 Win at 150 gr bullet with 52.0 gr of H380 is 2787 fps
.270 Win at 150 gr bullet with 46.0 gr of H380 is 2655 fps
Velocities are comparable given max loads with a couple combinations.
I give the edge to the .308 simply because you have a heavier round option.

I've got the .270 going from 90 -180 gr. bullets
the .308 100-250 gr. bullets

Im referencing my Lymans 48th edition.
either way, velocities are within a 100 fps (5%), with a wider variety for the the .308.
edge to .308
And we haven't started talking about .30 caliber sabot rounds.

.308 is probably the most versatile.
.308 is going to be my next rifle.
the .204 has my attention for a varmint round. too small and light for deer, but hell on yotes...
