I'm interested in a composite semi-auto that is reliable and has the best punch. Any thoughts?

Im a bit biased.
I dont like the feel of glock
IF you can find them, take a look at the XD.
What caliber and use do you want?

I love my Kahr P-40, and they make a 45 and 9mm also, in several different grip/slide sizes. I've with Fronty on the Glock...they just don't fit my hand at all, and short range flash picture shooting suffers a lot.

Smith and Wesson M&P would be my first choice. I wouldn't have said that 2 months ago but I've had the chance to spend some time with them and I like them. Cheaper than a Glock or an XD.
Punch is punch if you buy a 45 it's a 45, if you buy a 9 it's a 9.

Another vote for the Springfield XD but most important is for you to get your hands on as many different models/brands as possible and pick the one you like the best.
Make your selection on comfort and natural sight alignment. This entails getting a proper grip on the pistol and then bringing it up to eye level and seeing where the sights align. If it is on the target then it is a good candidate. If it is off the target then I wouldn't consider that one. Each one has its own ergonomics and you need to find the one that fits you.

XD's are good guns but the slide sits too high for me plus when it breaks you have to send it in for repair. Since Brownells sells factory parts for Smiths I assume they will add the M&P line in their next catalog.
Glocks and 1911's are by far the easiest gun to get parts for.

I really like my glock. But it is truly what fits you the best.

another vote for XD by Springfield Arms...where are you ...
fill out your sig ...someone in your area can let you ""TRY B4 YOU BUY""
AND I don't know how someone "BROKE a XD ... but they are MORE than reliable...and NEVER break...and if you use good ammo you wont have any problems with an XD:D

BT2Flip XD's break. They did address some of the issues with the guide rods breaking on the 40's but they still break. Springs, extractors, ejectors and other parts.
When they do break it's a trip to the UPS or FED EX office to ship it back.
I'm not saying they aren't good guns but anything mechanical can break.
We had one XD that didn't last 3 days at the range where I was working.

I do not like the Glock grip, the XD grip is better, the M&P is definitely a nice gun.
