UMC is ok. there has been some talk on ARFCOM about bullet setback with UMC, but it seems to be only a few people had that issue. for plinking ammo, I usually pick up some Malaysian surplus or Wolf. $.50/rd isn't bad for the times, It would be nice if it would go back to $.10/rd

shovelhead, have you had any problems with yours? how long you had it? just curious as to if these s&w's are pretty durable

Cant speak so much for the S&Ws, but for the most part, an AR is an AR.
Your quality comes in details such as a chrome line chamber, properly staked gas key, and other quality control steps on pressure containing parts like the bolt and bolt carrier.

here is a comparison chart for the different manufacturers. Im not saying colt is the best and the only rifle to own (I dont drink that much koolaid). Some items are quality, some help reliability, some are just "hey, we do this"

thanks for the chart....i do know mine is 1 9 twist ...whats the difference in that and 1 7? seems i read something about 1 9 makes certain grains tumble at some odd yards.... am i close?

If I remember correctly, 1 in 9 is better stabalization for lighter bullets (under 65 gr) while the 1 in 7 is better for over 65 gr.
Thats not saying you cant shoot heavy bullets in a 1 in 9, but wont get the optimal stabalization and best accuracy.

I bought it 5 days after election day.

The guy I bought it from was using 75gr JHP Wolf and claiming (provided target) "100yd" groups of around 2" w/ HIS scope.

I haven't had a chance to actually SHOOT it yet........everytime I take it to the country with me on the weekend, there's either too much OTHER stuff to do, or it rains........

Hopefully the Honey-Do list is getting short enough to allow me a couple hours of rain-free time in the next couple of weeks. ;)

I have a combo platter of UMC 55gr FMJ, Wolf 75gr JHP, Wolf 62gr FMJ, Wolf 62gr JHP, and Prvi-Partizan 75gr JHP Match to see how she "eats".

From the EXCELLENT article Jack posted a looong time ago, about ARs:
