I use a bench grinder with paper wheels on it and love it for the fact it takes 1 minute to have a razor sharp knife.
What do you use and do you, like it and why?

I have never had much luck with one myself. Even though I have no reason to practice with one when I've got the paper wheels.
Ever tried a paper wheel, or seen one?

Heck yeah. I've got a scar on my arm because of one (due to the sharpness of the knife not the wheel itself). I plan on getting a set, but haven't found a place to get one yet.

I bought mine off e-bay. They do a really good job of getting a knife razor sharp in about a minute.
They used to have brochure inside Bass Pro for them, next time I go I could pick one up and give you the info if you wanted one.

Here's what I use. Bought it at Cabela's for $40.
I really like how you can keep a consistent angle on the blade. Works really well. :)

I had tried one similar to that. found it a bit of PITA for edge maintenance.

I use 3 honing stones about 2 1/2" wide x 10 " long, course - medium - fine each mounted on a wooden base and honing oil. Usually if the knife was sharped before I only have to touch it up with the fine stone.
I am curious as to what these paper wheels are can you post a picture ?

steel rod.

That's what I use and it works great.
For a really dull knife I start with one of those Smith kits (similar to the Gatco above) and then use a steel to get a razor sharp edge.
The paper wheel sounds interesting. Is it something like this? Sharpening wheel link (http://www.osograndeknives.com/Razor%20Sharp%20Edgemaking%20System/razor_sharp_-_10_x_1_slotted_wheel,_5_8_hole_bushed_to_1_2.htm)

Yep thats it, my only complaint with it is that it is hard to keep your angle right on it. But small knives area breeze with it.

Lansky hands down. Take it with me when I hunt. Human power. Angles are the same every time...

it takes some practice, but for very hard blades, I use the edge of the window on my truck.
Roll the window about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down and work it like you would a stone or steel.

Any piece of tempered glass will work.
Glass has a hardness of something like 1500 Brinell.
