View Full Version : Sako production problems?

I've been looking to add a Sako 85 to my inventory for quite a while now, and I just can't find one! All the dealers I talk to say they've got them on backorder, or they can order one, but there's no guarantee of an arrival date. Some have said it's because Beretta USA is having import problems, others have said there's a lack of firearms quality steel in Finland. Anybody have the straight poop? I'm really looking for a .338 Win Mag to fill out the gap between my 6.5-284 and my .375 H&H. I know that's a big gap...but the 338 is the first filler :D
I'm not a big fan of the Remchester rifles, Weatherbys fit me like a horse saddle fits a camel, and I've had bad experiences with the new Kimbers. Any alternatives?

I like these myself.

That's what my .375 H&H is. Love the rifle, shoots great, fits well, but weighs right at 11lbs with scope, sling and ammo. I'm looking for something a little lighter to carry for caribou and moose in rough terrain. I had used a .264 Win Mag for all the thin-skinned critters but wandered across a few too many bears, so now if I'm hunting anything in AK, my minimum caliber is .338 unless it's a winter hunt.

Ok, how about having Top barrel a 98 mauser action for ya with a Pachmyer stock?

Another good choice Redleg:) My 6.5-284 is a Mauser 98 with a 28" Pac-Nor bbl and an old Fajen Stock. I like the Mauser 98, but it took me months to put that rifle together, a few more months on the stock inletting and finishing, and the overall fit and finish still isn't quite what I'd like it to be. I think I'm going to strip it all down and send it to Robar so they can throw a coat of NP3 on the internals and Roguard the outside. Hopefully that will smooth out what's left of the tooling marks. I'm trying to stay away from project guns for a while...got a truck and a house to spend my time on.:D
I had thought about having someone build me a rifle based on the Dakota 76 action, but I just don't want to spend that kind of money right now. By the time I bought just the components I'd be into the $1000 range, and I'd still have to pay the gunsmith and the stocksmith for labor. A new Sako (if I can find one) runs about $1300. I'd really like to know what happened to their production and import volumes...

They heard Obama was elected and started stockpiling...
