I often wonder if it should be mandatory for LEOs to take a class in terminal ballistics of pistol cartridges. I understand you don't have to be a gun-nut to be a LEO, but an above-average understanding of what happens when a bullet hits a target would probably be a good idea. It would certainly defuse many of the press reports quoting an uneducated LEO's fear of "death bullets" such as the Black Talon which "spins like a circular saw cutting its way through your body armor".

There are a lot of people alive that people said should be dead from the wounds they received and there are a lot of people dead from minor injuries. The desire for life makes a big difference in what happens.

The training value of that classroom knowledge would certainly add to the LEO's certificate collection. It won't alter the fact that bullets don't work magic. Unless you hit a subject with a high velocity round to the brain or sever the upper cervical spine all you have to rely on is bleed-out. That means 25 to 40 percent blood loss that will cause enough oxygen depravation to the brain to shut the body down. It can take seconds, if not minutes, for that to happen. Sure, you can knock a guy down by hitting him in his delivery system, legs, hips and the like, but he can still engage from the ground.

Take a look at the Mattox and Plat vs FBI shootout. The bad guy that did most of the killing was dead when the first rounds hit him, just took awhile for his body to acknowledge that. He was commited to winning.

Range practice and weapon knowledge are great tools, sometimes luck figures in. Mindset and tactics are just as important.

They do teach them that stuff. That's why they are taught to double-tap, fill the keyhole, and don't stop til he's down or you're out of bullets. Also a lot of rounds get spent providing cover fire to enable somebody to get into a good postion to enflict a fatal shot. Even if there isn't a clear shot, the bullistic education also encourages you to attempt to use hard surfaces to ricochet bulletts at your target if need be. The press can't understand that dead is dead, 1 bullet or 100. It'll never make a difference to them, their job is to create controversy to drive up sales.
