snake shot

I did a search and found nothing. so i'm thinking about getting some snake shot for 22LR or 45 ACP dont know witch would be better. or if it's worth haveing. looking for feed back on it.

For snakes I prefer a 20 gauge shotgun. But in a pinch snake shot in a pistol will work. Don't know how well .45acp will cycle with snake shot but it should do the job.

A .22 is great for rats, but I wouldn't try it with a large rattle snake.

had a buddy kill a 47 in. rattler with snake shot in 22 with one of those little palm pistols. head shot will do wonders out to about 8 ft.

snake/rat shot doesn't work well in automatics. they plastic cap housing the shot tends to break during cycling.

picked up some 22LR today.never tought about chambering in an auto. think i will test fire a few to see how well thell work or not.

dont know the brand but there is a round out there that is crimped on the end instead of plastic cap. says for autos.

the crimped end is CCI and does NOT cycle the XD45 or the XDm9mm

I dunno, a 180 gr FMJ .40S&W does wonders on a snake...

A wheel gun of appropriate caliber (.38 and up) is properly the gun of choice for snake shot. In autos it just is not reliable enough to cycle. In a .22, there is simply not enough shot to be an effective round; you may as well spit at them or throw sand.

Copperheads are the real nusiance snakes in these parts. I have been thinking strongly about getting a "Judge" to carry when I am on the tractor just for such an occasion. Sure I could and have run them over with the wheel or bushhog but where is the fun in that?:D A three inch .410 of #8's at twelve feet from a pistol would make for a real bad (or good from my point of view) snake day.:cool:

You can custom load your own snake shot. My dad uses a Colt single action .44-40 but there isn't any preloads made for them, so he reloads his. As for the plastic casing I can't remember if he is using a different caliber or not. The most effective snake death with snake shot is when that blue cap holding the pellets is what goes through the head.
A good way to figure it is if a guns loading system lets the snake shot come in contact with another round it will not work. Unless you load it directly into the chamber. We've done that some when we need a little more reach or tighter grouping and we just drop it in the firing chamber of the lever action .44-40.

Going to get one for my wife to carry against Rattlers and Copperheads. Not bad for PD either.
