Palerider, I'd only add that you need to select a sidearm and holster that you are COMFORTABLE carrying all day long.
Shooting well with a 6" barreled wheelgun is useless if you can't stand to carry the weight. A GOOD gunbelt goes a loooong way toward making a comfortable rig. A CCW sitting on the night stand is useless if it's not on your side when you need it. ![]() I have forgotten many times that I have my Commander on my side when working around the house. My Lightweight Commander in a Milt Sparks VM II IWB holster with a Bianchi belt works for me.

I think Ruger makes a slim polymer pistol. I don't have any personal knowledge of it.
Summer wear in AZ it's hard to beat a J frame Smith. Let us know what you decide.

Check out the Kahr lineup of pistols. VERY slim and ergonomic. The P series is their high grade and the CW is the standard grade. You can pickup the CW9 in the low 300's.

Just received an IWB Crossbreed holster for my CCL.......very comfortable carrying my H&K USP compact.
