Heckler & Koch 91A2 owners
Are there any HK91A2 rifle owners here on the forum? I picked my rifle up NIB ($600.00) back in 1985 while I was TDY (USAF) up in Alaska. It was one of the purchases that I've made during my life that has NEVER caused me any grief. It's been a really dependable, straight shooting rifle.
I had been mulling around the idea of purchasing a paramilitary rifle for quite some time. I knew that whatever rifle I chose was going to have to be a 7.62 NATO caliber because I didn't like the "varmint" round that our military was using. The three rifles that I had been trying to choose between were the Fabrique Nationale FAL, Heckler & Koch 91A2, and the Springfield Armory M1A. If I remember right, the first rifle that was removed from the list was the FAL. It was dropped because of the overall length of the rifle. It just seemed a bit bulky and my Brit friend, who served two tours in Ireland, didn't have many good things to say about it. The Springfield M1A was the next to be dropped because of the price mostly. I really liked the rifle but the pay grade that I was in at the time prohibited me from really considering it. So, my final choice was the HK91A2 and, like I've said earlier, there hasn't been any regrets. The other weekend I took some guys out to the high power range and we commenced to putting our rifles through their paces. I caught their attention when I started shooting clay pigeons out at the 300 yard line. I have a Springfield Armory 6x40 Government scope on the rifle and the reticule design makes for quick range estimation and the optics are beautifully clear and crisp. One of the first modifications I made to the rifle was a William's set trigger group that brought the trigger pull down to 3.5 lbs. without using set and 2.5 lbs. with set. This really improved shot placement as the original trigger pull was just absurd.

For $600 that might be something I'd consider.

You wouldn't be able to purchase a HK-91A2 for much less than $1800.00 now.

How do you like the HK 93? The only reason I didn't get a 93 back in '85 was the fact that I was looking for 7.62 NATO rifle.

Their ok, Their kinda bulky and heavy. One of mine is a conversion to class3 and the other just plain semi. If you reload you gotta have a buffer on them or they will bugger up the case. The ar-15 is a much better rifle to me and you can get more acc. for it. Actually i like the israel galil over both of them.

Yep, the ejection port buffer was one of the first things I got for my 91. It was putting a wicked ding into the cases and I wanted to reload. The one thing that you would never have to worry about with the 91 was a weak ejection of the cases. My 91 throws brass about thirty feet or more away.

The 91 is a fine rifle indeed. Love 'em.
Curious though about the quick dismissal of the FN? In full trim, they are a bit long and bulky. However, I have a Para model with a 21" barrel that is under ten lbs with a full mag. With iron sights I have shot 1/2" @100yds and 5" @450 yds. The adjusting gas port ensures I don't ding up my cases and 1000's of rounds with no jams ever. It is very easy to disassemble and clean as well-- the only negative is optic sight solutions. I have a leatherwood mount that solves the problem, but then the iron sights are out of play. Back to the thread... the HK is a wonderful shooter and love the ghost ring front sight. The factory mags leave a little something to be desired... the "waffle" mags I thought were flimsy. |

I did have a HK91 back in the early 80's and was never really impressed with it. Did have it rigged out with the factory bipod, injection port buffer, carrying handle and the MG rear sight. Had it for a few years and sold it. What I really wanted was the SIG PE57 or 510 (AMT). Never could afford it.
But I'm a big fan of the FN. Scope solutions does stink but the SUIT Trilux is probably the best one out there. Both the British and the Israelis used this type of scope. I have one on the L1A1. On the FAL I have a picatinny rail top cover and it works pretty good and the open sights can be used if using see through mounts. MikeyB |

Those magazines that you're referring to are the aluminum mags. I've never used any, personally. Mine are all the steel kind.
