Long range rifle... Rem 700 in 338 lapua or?
I'm thinking of getting a long range powerful rifle, to dink with off the bench, and maybe for elk.
Practical would be a 300 Win mag, but that 338 Lapua has me interested. Does anyone have one of the Remington 700 XCR's? (number 8446). I think it is in the 8 1/2 pound range, where the MLR Police is like 10 lbs. I want something that will deliver decent long range accuracy, but don't want to totally break the bank. |

I like the Savage over the Rem 700.
Are you a reloader?

Yes, I reload.
I have a Savage, and it is a nice rifle. I think with this one, though, I'll go with the Remington. The 700 long action seems to be pretty well respected. The Lapua appears to be both brutal and expensive to shoot (even reloading), so I think I've settled on 300 Remington Ultra Mag. |

Why the ultra mag? If your just bench shooting and possibly killing elk, why not the 300 win mag. You can find ammo everywhere, you can even find match ammo for the win mag.
