"New" 870 Express Mag

I picked up a preowned 870 Express mag. this week for $200. It came with a "turkey tube" and a full choke tube. It is clean with only a couple minore stock blemishes and it shows very little wear. No rust. I believe I will be just as happy with this as I would have been with the Norinco 93/97. Especially since I now have some money left to buy shells

I plan on eventually getting a complete choke set up so I won,t have any excuses for not hunting. Not that I can think of any now. A rifled barrel with iron sights are also in the plans. I really like my 1100 but I hunt with a club and we are always unloading to get into our vehicles and reloading when we get into the field. A pump makes this safer and easier IMHO. Besides obvious safety reasons, the game laws in Surry County VA prohibit having a loaded rifle or shotgun on the roadway.

I purchased a "Dead Coyote" Choke tube that was supposed to fit my 870. It said on the card "fits most Remington Shotguns". Well, it didn't. It was .010 inch to large at the threads and a coarser thread than what fits my barrel. I mic'd the original choke tube and it measures about .809" X 32th. Which sounds like a Invector Choke. What are the factory "Remchoke" deminsions? Was the Dead Coyote tube miss labeled or is my gun different for some reason? I have a TRUGLO turkey tube that throws 000 Buck real good. But I was looking for something a little better. It puts ten shot inside a twenty inch circle dead on point of aim at 40yds.

go for the full set if you would like. I may end up getting a full set eventually too. Right now, I have a IC for skeet, Mod for game, full for late season game, and a turkey choke.
the problem with a wide variety of chokes is you kinda have to get out and miss a few then decide which way to change. now your not hunting while you you hunt for the choke you want.

I've had an 870 now for a few years. Love it.

For chokes I have the factory modified choke that came with it. Earlier this year I bought a Truglo Gobble Stopper turkey choke that extends the barrel about an inch, which makes it real easy to install and remove. I want to get a full so I have something in between the two.

A few months ago, I bought a 24" rifled slug barrel w/ scope from Cabelas for deer season.

I really like how versatile the 870 is.

This is actually the second 870 I have owned. The other was a Wingmaster and it functioned flawlessly. I had a slug barrel and a 28" mod. The two things I really like about this one is, it is a 3" magnum and it has the Remchoke. The barrel is a little longer than I like but for only two bills, I'll get use to it.

Tomorrow is the opening day of modern firearms deer hunting in VA. Time to give the 870 a "field trial". Remington 3" 000 Buck patterns real tight at 40 yds. and hits point of aim. IF i do everything right I should bring home a nice chunk of meat. Good luck to all who partake in the hunt and may your safety be paramount. You are responsible for everything you hit. Be sure of your surroundings and mind your fellow hunters. Everybody isn't as good as you are. Show patients and consideration. Teach, don't be a show off. And NEVER point your gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.

YEP! it hits point of aim at 65 yards alright. I was in a tree a stand friday evening and the first oppurtunity for a shot came in the form of a really old 85# button buck. I was in a tree stand and the buck came into the field late in the evening at about a hundred yards from me on my right. I watched him for about ten minutes before he decided to meander my way. When he turned to look out in the field I shot one time. He spun around, dropped, kicked and didn't move again. I sighted on the top of his shoulder and put three Remington 000 buck pellets into the heart lung area and a fourth hit the hindquarter but just got under the skin.
