'Nother noob

Looks common for people to cross over from DTR, chalk up another one. Same name there as here...

Working on picking up a couple handguns soon, probably looking at a 357 revolver and a 9mm. Likely a XDm or H&K, but not certain yet, still open to opinions.

interesting note: got married and bought a house in Oct. and been living there since. The garage has a small attic space over it, and we have never even looked up there. Sunday I was cleaning up and ventured up there. Found a bunch of burlap bags and wrapped inside was an old shotgun shocker that was... From what I gather it is an early 1900 single barrel break open 20 gauge stamped Nitro King

Welcome aboard. You'll like it here. It's not as hectic as DTR to check new posts every day (yet) but there's a great collective knowledge on all things weapon related. It helps when we've got licensed dealers and LEOs to post facts and clear a bunch of speculation too.

As you're looking to pick up a few pistols, I'd suggest your read "Rules for a Gunfight" in the General Gun Discussion Forum. Pay particular attention to rule #24.

Thanks, that was a good read, many quotable statements.

I am looking at smaller caliber for now, going to be my first handguns and I want the wife to be comfortable with them too. After this round, I will step into the .44 or .45 levels

You'd be surprised how many "Men" think "Wimmens" can't handle the punishment of a .45, only to find out that their wife/girlfriend/daughter out-shoots them when they pick up that 1911...........

haha if she did, I would proudly post right here about it and let you know!

How much difference in recoil is there between a 45 and a 9 of same make/model, like between an XD40 or XD9? Is it really noticable? Still a noob in pistols, grew up with shotguns my whole life...

The .45 has a little more recoil, but then it would also depend on the round selected.

ie a 147gr 9mm vs a 115gr 9mm, or a standard vs +P (hot) load.
or
a 230gr .45 vs 165gr .45 bullet weight, +p etc.......

My wife (5'4"/120lbs) consistently outshoots me with all my handguns except the .500. This includes my 10mm, my .45, my .40 and my .22s. She's going to get a S&W 629 Backpacker for her birthday, and I'm sure she'll shoot that one better than I do too.

Rifles are a different story right now, but I'm sure if she sets her mind to it my .375 won't be just mine anymore.

I grew up with guns, and heard wonderful stories about excessive recoil and how a big gun could break your wrists or shoulder, and even though I don't believe it any more, I'm sure I developed bad habits somewhere along the line that I'm still paying for. She never touched a gun until the military, and had no preconceived notions about recoil. As such, it doesn't affect her so long as it's within her actual physical limitations.

Well, went shopping yesterday. I couldn't decide which I wanted, so I ended up with both....

H&K P20000 in 9mm used but in brand new condition.
S&W model 686 .357 also used, but in great shape.

The guy threw in a box of shells for each with the deal as well. Might try to get to the farm and do some shooting this weekend since it is suppsed to be nice
