Obamas Gun Dance

Obama's Gun Dance

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Barack Obama, who informs campaign audiences that he taught constitutional law for 10 years, might be expected to weigh in on the historic Second Amendment case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The justices are pondering whether the 1976 District of Columbia law effectively prohibiting personal gun ownership in the nation's capital is constitutional. But Sen. Obama has not stated his position.

Obama, disagreeing with the D.C. government and gun control advocates, declares the Second Amendment's "right of the people to keep and bear arms" applies to individuals, not just the "well-regulated militia" cited in the amendment. In the next breath, he asserts this constitutional guarantee does not preclude local "common sense" restrictions on firearms. Does the Draconian prohibition for Washington, D.C., fit that description? My attempts to get an answer have proved unavailing. The front-running Democratic presidential candidate is doing the gun dance.

That is a dance of many Democrats, revealed by my private conversations with the party's strategists. As urban liberals, they reject constitutional protection for gun owners. As campaign managers, they want to avoid re-enacting the fate of many Democratic candidates who lost elections because of gun control advocacy. The party's House leadership last year pulled off the floor a bill for a District of Columbia congressional seat in order to save Democratic members from having to vote on a Republican amendment against the D.C. gun law.

I have a feeling that Obama will roll with the polls. If we keep the pressure on then he will be thinking twice about more gun control.

They believe the right of the people to keep and bear arms just like they believe in the right of free speech.

You have the right to keep and bear arms as long as you agree with their rules and regulations. For the free speech, as long as you say what they would if they were talking then you should have free speech. If you disagree then some "reasonable" restrictions should apply. They define "reasonable" as only their point of view should or will be heard.

Syndicated Radio News Commentator Neal Boortz brought up some good points on Obama and Guns in his Blog today. Here is what he said:

OBAMA ON GUN OWNERSHIP
By Neal Boortz @ November 21, 2008 8:10 AM

Remember a few days ago I gave you the link so that you could apply for a position in the Obama Administration? You would have to fill out some 63 questions about some very personal issues. One of which the Obama camp chose to include was about gun ownership. Under the headline of "Miscellaneous," the question reads: "Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage."

A question like this DID NOT exist for the Bush Administration. But many people, including the NRA, are upset by this question. Apparently one Republican Senator has already considered legislation that would make it illegal for a president to use an applicant's gun ownership status to deny anyone of employment.

I thought this was pretty interesting and IMO "drives home" the point about Obama wanting to "get in your business" about gun ownership!
