This worry made the rounds through the military community in the early 90's. Squadron Commander (during a formation) asked a simple question of "If we had to go door to door on base and collect people's guns, what would you do?" Most of us said we wouldn't do it. Arrogant Master Sergeant said we'd all do it if he ordered us to do it, and someone in the back of the formation said it wasn't a lawful order. MSgt says the senior leadership decides what's legal or not, and we'll do whatever he or the commander says. A different kid in the back (think he was an E-3) says there are bigger issues at play than the orders of someone who forgot the oath of enlistment and the MSgt said he wouldn't accept "such outright mutiny" and tried to put the kid in handcuffs. He quickly found himself surrounded by people who weren't there to help him. The only thing that stopped the MSgt from ending up in the hospital was the commander, who managed to reassert some authority and break up the fight before it started. Turns out our unit wasn't the only one where that particular scenario played out. It raised such an outcry of anger and disorder throughout the whole base that the Wing Commander ordered a Commander's Call to quell the rumors and stop a protest before it got too big a head of steam.

While I don’t think the response would be quite as fiery today as it was 14 years ago, I’m pretty certain it would eventually play out the same way.
