Old guy, new gun owner

While not exactly a new gun owner, I am having trouble understanding all the current lingo. I have four shotguns, two rifles and a new J frame 38 DA/SA Smith&Wesson 38 revolver. I also served in the USMC back in the days of Korea. I'm hesitant to ask for help because you guys use terms I don't recognize. For example, I just learned that a revolver is not a pistol. The experts use this term for semi-automatics. How can I catch up with you guys so I don't sound like a complete idiot? Also, I have recently taken a cc handgun course and have a cc permit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A revolver is NOT a pistol?.......

That a new one on me.

weapon
Main
small firearm designed for one-hand use. According to one theory, pistols owe their name to the city of Pistoia, Italy, where handguns were made as early as the 15th century. The pistol was originally a cavalry weapon. The military advantages of a firearm that could be operated by one hand, leaving the other free for another weapon or for defense, were clear from the earliest days of gunpowder, and the pistol evolved simultaneously with such shoulder weapons as the harquebus and musket.

Welcome to the site.

I am confused too. But, all the gun sites I have checked on, without exception, list revolvers separate from pistols. Then I read the opinions from experts where they, too, never call a revolver a pistol. I may be out of date but I thought both revolvers & semi-automatics were pistols!
