You can custom load your own snake shot. My dad uses a Colt single action .44-40 but there isn't any preloads made for them, so he reloads his. As for the plastic casing I can't remember if he is using a different caliber or not. The most effective snake death with snake shot is when that blue cap holding the pellets is what goes through the head.
A good way to figure it is if a guns loading system lets the snake shot come in contact with another round it will not work. Unless you load it directly into the chamber. We've done that some when we need a little more reach or tighter grouping and we just drop it in the firing chamber of the lever action .44-40.
